Paranormal Activity 3 Review [2]
Posted by Joseph Lee on 10.24.2011

Starring:

*Christopher Nicholas Smith as Dennis
*Lauren Bittner as Julie
*Chloe Csengery as Young Katie
*Jessica Tyler Brown as Young Kristi
*Katie Featherston as Katie
*Sprague Grayden as Kristi

Story: In 1988, young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity who resides in their home.

Trivia: This film was directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who broke onto the scene with their documentary Catfish last year.

Before this review gets started, I should say that if you don't love the first two Paranormal Activity movies, then you're not going to like Paranormal Activity 3. It follows the same formula (more or less) and the same type of story while mixing up the scares. But if you are a fan of this series, then you'll love the latest installment. As for myself, I had the original as my favorite horror film of 2009, and the second, while suffering from some issues, managed to hold its own. I don't get excited for many mainstream horror films these days (and with the current track record, why should I?), but I was ready for this paranormal prequel.

Yes, this is a prequel. Instead of following up on the ending from the second entry, we're going back in time eighteen years from the the first film. This one explains what exactly Katie was talking about when she said she had went through this before. In some prequels, it's pretty obvious what's going to happen, such as The Thing. If you've seen the Carpenter version, you can guess the fates of everyone in the prequel. However, with this series, a prequel only tells us that Kristi and Katie will make it, but what will happen to them before the end, as well as what will happen to their parents is up in the air.

The movie opens with adult Katie putting a box of video tapes in the basement of adult Kristi. Then, when the house is trashed in part two, the box is the only thing missing. That sets the stage to go back to the eighties where we meet a new family, with our lead characters now much younger. Kristi has an invisible friend named Toby and if you aren't suspicious about that then you haven't been watching these movies long. At the same time, things start getting weird and Dennis (Smith) decides to use the cameras from his wedding recording job to film the supernatural events.

Paranormal Activity 3 differs from the other two in that it moves slowly for a shorter amount of time. When the demon finally begins his overt terrorism of the family, it gets a lot more intense and all hell breaks loose. For those who were bored by the original, claiming that nothing happened (it's called building suspense, for the record), you may enjoy this one more. The demon gets absolutely insane towards the end and things do happen. It's not quite the same as the past entries, but it also works in that regard. By this point we know it's a demon and we know what it's capable of. Might as well not play the cat and mouse game in that case.

Without continuing to compare it to its predecessors, how does the film stand on its own? It's just a solid, and more importantly, fun horror movie. This is actually the first of the series that I viewed in a theatre, having watched the other two on DVD in my own home. It's a much better experience sitting among like-minded individuals who gasp and jump at the intended scares and allow themselves to be carried along for the ride.

The movie also features some of the better acting in entire series, which admittedly has always been one of the worst parts about it. Yes, Micah was annoying and the father in Paranormal Activity 2 was the same for completely different reasons. But I think we have found a suitable lead male in the form of Christopher Nicholas Smith, who plays Dennis as the epitome of an everyman. He's not overly skeptical, he's not an idiot. He just notices the activity early and wishes to record it to get proof and find out what the entity wants to get rid of it. The audience already knows what it wants, but Dennis is a lot more proactive than the men in the last two films.

The best acting comes from the two little girls, because it doesn't seem like they are acting. I suspect that outside of setting up some of the special effects shots, they might have went "method" on this and just ad-libbed with the girls. The bulk of their material doesn't feel scripted. It probably was, but what matters is that it doesn't come across that way. Jessica Tyler Brown in particular really holds her own. She's cute in some scenes and even a little creepy in others. I'd be interesting in seeing what she could do in a more standard type of film.

The special effects are really put to the test here as this employs the most of them. Outside of one shot at the beginning and another at the end, it looks as though most of them were done practically. At the very least, one could see how they could be done practically. This movie uses special effects to play with audience expectations, and the effects in general are very, very good. Once again, compare the effects used here with something like last weekend's The Thing and there is huge difference in quality and effectiveness.

But there are some minor problems. First of all, I didn't like the finale. The story had to progress and technically introducing the new twist makes sense, but I just found it goofy and didn't think the film had earned it. I suspect the end of this movie will draw a few comparisons to last year's The Last Exorcism, but thankfully this one isn't quite as over the top. There still is that feeling of dread that the film likes to employ, but it's almost overshadowed by the silliness of that twist.

However, it doesn't detract from the fact that Paranormal Activity 3 is another solid entry in the franchise and overall a very fun horror film to watch. It retains some of what made the first film great (the slow burn and building of tension) while also attempting to go the other way and get a little crazy towards the finale. It all goes back to my original statement. If you're not a fan of the first two, you won't like this. If you are a fan, then you'll probably love it like I did. To quote 411's J.D. Dunn: "More of the same, but damn they're good at it."

The 411Paranormal Activity 3 is a definite step up from the last film, but it doesn't quite match the heights of the original. If the original film was all about subtlety, this one is more of the mindset to throw everything at its audience in an attempt to scare. Sometimes it doesn't work, but a lot of the time it does, and that makes this prequel another solid entry in a growing franchise. This is how you do horror, you make it scary. Bring on Part 4!

Final Score:  8.0   [ Very Good ]  legend

Wait a minute....I loved the shit out of Part 1, but Part 2 didn't do it for me. What does it mean for me?

It's really bizarre how everyone on this site worships JD Dunn.

This movie was a load of garbage half the scenes in the pre-views were'nt even in the movie, biggest crock of shit and waste of time and money, I would have had more fun playing with a fat kid. There is no need for a 4th one if its anything like the 3rd

The male in this ISN'T an idiot - what were you watching? Also, he randomly finds a photograph and sees that they had an ancestor in a coven, but we don't see how he knows that?

This is just like the note in Saw III that sent the entire series spiraling out of control and no longer making sense with each individual series entry. The story is CLEARLY incomplete - no house fire, no person at the foot of Katie's bed, etc. and they had all those OTHER VHS tapes from other years. That means they intend to extend this series at the expense of continuity and giving the GENUINE fans (who are less concerned with the cheap scares of PA3 than they are with decent storytelling) any fulfillment or sense that they have a largely complete understanding of the story THUS FAR.

As for talk about the effects and such things, the film quality is CLEARLY not VHS, they dropped the introduction which thanked the families, it made little or no sense that these videos remain to begin with, etc. - so all the "real world" believability (what the series is built upon regarding our suspension of disbelief) is gone.

It's sad that some fans don't realize that, unless someone MAKES THIS STORY WEAVE TOGETHER in part 4, they just witnessed the series "jumping the shark." Why not just let someone come along for part 4 who's written some terrible, "barely-related to the series continuity" ghost story with a bunch of false scares and inconsistent storytelling and just vaguely connect it to the others (like 3)? About the only things that connected were the "found footage" format (which is all over the place now) and that there were two sisters with the same names. Oh - and they worked in, in the most shoehorned-in fashion, when they photographed the picture of Katie seen in the other films.

They added very little, sensibly, to the series continuity, story continuation, etc. and largely derailed it.

So, let's see:
Incomplete story

Doesn't fit what we were told in the other films (Family, what happened when they were kids and it covers it with a, "They get brainwashed." generic line from out of nowhere)

Isn't executed in line with the format and timeframe it tells us that it is (picture's too clear, it's widescreen ((For home wedding videos in 1988?!)), everyone's BEHAVIOR is that of people who are post-millennial, etc.)

Generic babysitter stereotype from every film in the '80s

Doesn't add much to the narrative or mythology

Has loose ends related to who did what and why within its own film

And a whole lot of other problems.

Yet the above reviewer and others clearly missed this or don't care that they fund cheap cash grabs that help ruin decent series. I assume they don't know much about horror, PA's continuity, storytelling or the '80s. Or some combination of those.

I agree with Steve. The story added more questions than answers. We still do not know the why. What was the gain with giving up your first born male. What was recieved. Power? Wealth? Fame? Here is to hoping part 4 fills in the gaps & makes sense. Truth be told, I am ready for the series to go forward with a proper sequel detailing what became of Katie & the baby. But alas, we now need a another prequel story to explain the mess that was part 3. Loved the movie, but the story was lacking.

I saw this the other night. I haven't seen the others and even though after reading this review, I now know thia is a prequel, have no intention of seeing the others.
As a stand alone movie it was alright. a good number of people in the theatre were younger and were alternately quiet and then screamed in the right places. I have to admit that I jumped at one part.
It was nice for once seeing a male lead that didn't act like a douche about the situation but then they took that cliche and gave it to the mother which was a disappointment. I also didn't like that some of the scenes they used in the trailer weren't in the movie. I sort of understand why but that is also becoming a Hollywood trick and its boring.
So the movie itself was okay but nt good enough to make me watch the other two.

I love this movie. It's scary and exciting. It made my girlfriend so scared that she never want to watch another one from the series.

Thanks for the review, Mr. Lee. I look forward to seeing this.

I am worried as you and many are that this installment raises more questions than answers. However, I was pretty happy with how PA2 wrapped up some loose ends from PA1 (while, admittedly, introducing others) and am confident that patience will be rewarded with whatever comes up in PA3. Nice that these things can be released once a year for those of us that are enjoying the ride, huh?

Rick Tym, I don't mean to be a pessimist and I certainly hope the series "recovers" - but that's the same type of thing Saw fans were continually saying after the third or so in that series. And many or most felt the results the following years were inconsistent at best. Yes, this is a fairly different series in terms of premise, but the release dates, production schedules and (now, it seems - unfortunately for PA) approach to storytelling is quite similar.

Yes, it is great that further films can add things to what we already know or give us a sense of clarity on certain things which might have been a bit unclear before, but we shouldn't HAVE TO wait a year to feel like we got a full experience and know the story we need to know THUS FAR (although, obviously, another "prequel sequel" could come along and add or clarify something else otherwise). Yet many are wondering what exactly 3 added or clarified in relation to the PLOT (its effectiveness in terms of scares isn't what I'm questioning) which didn't feel like simply being sequel-baiting or waiting for us to buy the "Unrated" DVD or something. This isn't the "preferred reaction" of discerning fans. That they look at it and go, "It feels like something BIG is missing." That is, unless the films have converted to the "Saw format" at this point of not really giving us complete stories and constantly "teasing" the potential for clarification in further films - which they are unlikely to give us as they'll then be teasing the next one. The first two (Saws and PAs) didn't do that "constant teasing to draw fans back for the next," despite allowing for or even setting up possibilities in relation to a prequel or sequel.

So, historically, PA's chances in relation to pulling its storyline together aren't supported by the most obvious comparison nor by most franchise horror in the past thirty years once it "derails" itself in the hopes of making further sequels or selling more in the home media market. I hope 4 is amazing and works so I can then view 3 as "necessary" or view some "Unrated" version (with more) as solid storytelling but if PA 4, 5 and/or 6 is like PA 3 rather than PA 2 or 1, most people who are "enjoying the ride" (as with Saw fans) will soon grow frustrated and slowly realize that, despite some loose plans, they're making it up as they go along and are more concerned with box office receipts than telling a good/great story (for horror fans) in order to justify those box office receipts.

Here's hoping PA 4 is amazing. But myself and many others don't want 75% of a movie that seems inconsistent in its execution/believability related to its own premise/series (much like we felt PA3 was, regardless of how "fun" it may have been - as "fun" and "good storytelling" need not be opposites).

Posted By: Steve (Guest)  on October 26, 2011 at 09:19 AM

Steve,

Every point you made above was spot on. Even though I hold out hope, I'll be the first to admit if this series "Saws" itself, and will be extremely disappointed if that happens. I also understand the point many are making and agree with your thoughts that these installments would be better served at 100% completion (more or less) with the same amount of fun, rather than @ 75% with threads dangling and dripping with the promise of more prequel-y tidbits to come.

Here's hoping that PA4 is amazing (because you know it's coming). Even better, let's hope we see Katie and Hunter and start moving this story forward a bit. Any more backstory and this thing will be just another Saw, bogged down by flashbacks. If the PA crew keeps delving into the past with the entire run time of future installments, the egregious flashbacks of the later Saw films will seem good in comparison.

Most of all, Steve, thanks for responding to my comment with tact and thoughfulness, rather than just calling me a dope and cussing me out. Refreshing to see (not just here, but on los interwebs as a whole). Take care.

This is how you do horror? You mean doors randomly slamming, sounds of footsteps and people being dragged down hallways? How the fuck are these movies scary? No seriously? Tell me? What the fuck is scary about these movies?

Also the first movie built ZERO suspense. There is a difference between building suspense and being bored to tears

I didn't think the movie was too bad. The bad is that Katie Featherston and her amazing rack are barely in this movie. The good is that her mom is a MILF.

"It's really bizarre how everyone on this site worships JD Dunn."

Not really. I have a more consistent backstory and less restrictive credo than most of your major deities.

I really liked the first two. This one was the best acted, but weakest film, of the trio, and the ending let me down. I'd give it about a 6.5. They really need to wrap this one up with part 4 and call it a day.
